website dedication and disclaimer
This Web Site is dedicated to my Grandfather, Augustine Marie Dupont, my family past and present and to the Pioneer Prospectors whose skills and tenacity helped pave the way for us today. We who most times take the luxury of modern conveniences quite for granted. Us who have forgotten the life ,times and hardships of so long ago.

Grandpa Gus and Uncle Joe where one of the original prospector who braved the winter trails in the Red Lake Gold Rush of 1926, sleeping in wool blankets, on a bed of spruce boughs out in the open woods under the stars and cooking their meals of bacon, salt pork, bannock, beans , oh lots of beans, black tea and coffee over an open fire.

Acknowlegement

There are so many individual which have contributed to the compilation of the information for this web site. Many photographs have come from personal and others collections.

There is special thanks to Don Parrott, J E Richthammer ("J.J.") and Margaret McDougall who in the past took the time to compile and document the events of the birth of this community of Red Lake, Ontario,Canada.

Again to my parents and grandparents for having the courage to leave their home in Mattawa and venture to this wilderness country.
They were true Canadian Pioneers.
To the many other individuals who did the same.

Mostly to our Lord Jesus Christ for helping all these brave souls survive the treacherous journey to get to and build this place called,' Red Lake.'

Thank you to all.

From a pioneers point of view
by the late Gene (Wonitowi) Campbell

Joe Dupont and Gene Wonitowi , Clem Dupont and Gene Wonitowi

"Red Lake has had its share of personalities just like any other town. Some were famous, and some were otherwise. Men who have left their mark on the country, who toiled and made a place in the community, and those who just came here and still made good and helped the country along.

Women too, have helped make this country.
Some of those who came in during the early days (late 20's) weathered all sorts of hardships and remained long enough to see the reaping of their efforts. I was one of them- not that I was famous or infamous in any way, but I did see the district grow from an acorn to an oak, with all of its adversities and good times. I don't believe I could ever leave it, it's part of me.

To live here and enjoy it, one must be able to see beauty in a sunset on a summer evening, snowfall, or rainstorms. Ask any old-timers why they like it here.

They don't know why, they just like it.

Oh sure, we all love trips to the big city and the bright lights, but a week or two away and we're homesick for the bark of a dog or for the familiar cry of seagulls and ravens.

This country's wilderness is enchanting. We have a playground at our front door; a beach to go swimming in; forests to hunt in; and a lake to fish in.

There are incidents in life which are funny and some which are sad, but they all make up this wonderful place. There are heartbreaks and laughs that account for the outlooks people have. Old timers have seen good and bad and are always looking out for better days to come."
